First Dance Takes Place October 8 Eagerly Awaited Girl-Break Will Be Held In Gymnasium The first dance of the Saint Mary’s school year will take place on Saturday, October 8, from 8:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. in the school gymnasium. The dance is a giil break, with an admission fee of 2oc charged for couples as well as stags. The dance will be informal and music will be recorded. If the class dance marshals have not been elected by October 8,- all present senior dance marshals and any other ex marshals will he on duty to see that everything is in order. Girls will be appointed to serve during the dance. The Chief Dance Marshal for this year is Virginia Ann Landis and the senior dance marshals are Biniiy Chew Sylvia Newsoii, Beth Harriss, and Anne Cahoon. Eleven more marshals will be added to this group, in the following way: five from the iuiiior class, four from the fresh man and sophomore classes com bined, two from the business class, and one from the day students. Hicksj Dorris, Watkins Lead Honor Society Members of the Beacon, honorary society of the high'8011001 depart ment of Saint Mary s held then first meeting of the 1949-50 session on September 20. Alice Hicks elected president at the close of last year, presided as new officers weie selected. Those chosen were Libba Dorris, secretary, and Lou Ann W at- kins, treasurer. Alice Hicks, a sophomore, is from Faison, She is a member of the Letter Club, He Glee Club, the Dramatic Club, the Y W. G. A., the Granddaughters Club, and she is a Sigma. , • , • Libba Dorris, from Raleigh, is also a sophomore. She is a member of the Dramatic Club, the Grand daughters Club, the Canterbury Olubj and slie is a Mn. Lou Ann M^atkins is a sophomore from Henderson. She is a Mu and last year was the volleyball team manager. She served on the Legis lative Body, and is a member of the Canterbury Club. Mrs* Ellis Hauser Joins Library Staff New Assistant Librarian Was Graduated From Berea College Mrs. Ellis Hauser of Concord new est member of the Saint Mary’s staff, will serve this year as as sistant librarian. Mrs. Hausp’ grad uated from Berea College in Ken tucky with a major in Home Eco- iioinics. After receiving her diploma, she returned to Berea, where she first held the position of secretary to the Director of Veteran’s Service, and later was secretary to the Berea Bank and Trust. Mrs. Hauser was married two years ago. Her husband is a grad uate student studying agriculture at State College ; he is also teaching a lab course this year, and he ex pects to either continue teaching or devote his time to research. The Hausers have an apartment in Raleigh and are looking forward to making Raleigh their home for awhile. The BELLES would like to take this opportunity to welcome Airs. Hauser to Saint Alary’s. Dr. Stone lias annoimcecl the improvement of Mrs. Grove, Mrs. Stone’s mother, who has been ill for the past two Aveeks. The fac ulty and students of Saint Mary s wish her a quick recovery. Orchesis Picks Scott, Williamson As Leaders Orchesis, creative dance group, has elected A'ivian Scott president, and Betty Ann Williamson secre tary-treasurer for the year 1949-50. Vivian is a senior, and in her four years at Saint Alary s, she has been in the Dramatic Club and the Canterbury Club. This year she is a hall counselor and a crucifer in the chapel. A^ivian is a Sigma, and she is from Farmville. Betty Ann, in her third and jun ior year at Saint Alary’s, is from Cerro Gordo, S. C. She is a mem ber of the Dramatic Club, as well as the choir and Glee Club. She is the vice-president of the Y. W. C. A. this year, and she is a' Sigma. Sigma’s, Mu’s Initiate New Girls Into Groups The Sigma and AIu athletic asso ciations welcomed their new mem bers Friday night, September 23. The presidents, Sara Anne Proctor of the AIu’s and Pepper Heal of the Sigma’s, headed two processions which they led from room to room gathering girls Avhich were to be invited to join the respective asso ciations. When the line was com pleted, Sara Anne led the new Mu’s to the auditorium,, and Pepper led the new Sigma’s to the gym in which locations old members awaited the new, and welcomed them with songs and cheers. Beloved Pupil, Staff Member, Teacher, Dies in Rex Hospital Mrs. Alartha Roberts Simpson, long associated with Saint Alary’s, died suddenly Alonday night in Rex Hospital after a brief illness. Airs. Simpson, who was born in New Bern on April 15, 1882, first came to Saint Alary’s as a member of the junior class during the 1901- 02 term ; as an associate, or special, student, she graduated with an Eng lish certificate in 1903. Aliss Ebie, as she has been known to the stu dents, returned to the school in 1913 as a member of the music faculty, in Avhich capacity she remained until June of 1921. In addition to her duties of teaching piano and theory. Airs. Simpson served as organist for chapel services. After leaving Saint Alary’s Airs. Simpson joined the music faculty of the Pattersou School in Lenoir; later she taught music at Edwards Alilitary Institute in Salemhurg. Airs. Simpson Avas married iu 1924 in the Saint Alary’s chapel to AValter Simpson. Their early mar ried life Avas spent in Roanoke Ra pids, after which they returned to live in Raleigh. The Simpsons had one son, John Alexander Simpson who is now a resident of Raleigh. In 1940, Airs. Simpson returned to Saint Alary’s as a member of the staff and served as assistant house keeper. Ill recent years she held the position of switchboard operator. Airs. Simpson is survived by her son, a granddaughter, and three sisters: Airs. Emma R. King, Airs. Ivy R. VYaA-er, and Airs. K. IVay- laiid Yates, all of Raleigh. Funeral services were held in the chapel Wednesday afternoon. Surely no finer tribute can he paid to such a person as Aliss Ebie than that Avhich appeared in the 1903 Uluee under her senior pic ture : “One Avhom even critics do not criticize.” Church Organizations Sponsor Picnic Event The Canterbury Club and the YWCA of Saint Alary’s sponsored a picnic for the entire student body Sunday night, September 18, in the gymnasium. The guest speaker for tlie event Avas the Rev. Air. Ray Holder of Christ Church, Raleigh. Air. Holder spoke on “The Tradition of Saint Alary’s,” emphasizing the respect paid to all Saint Alary’s girls and their places in the Avorld after col lege. After the talk by Air. Holder, the individual halls presented original songs in competition for prizes. First West Bock Avon first place. Second place Avent to second floor East Wing.
